Week 17 - Jesus heals

Theme:

Jesus is able to heal the soul as well as the body.

He gives us inner freedom.

What I may wish to ask:

That I may see how much I depend on Jesus.

That I am able to follow Him in the liberating way in which He acts.

Music: Jesus bleibet meine Freude-J.S.Bach. CD After Silence – Voces8.

Jesus bleibet meine Freude

Meines Herzens Trost und Saft

Jesus wehret allem Leide

Er ist meines Lebens Kraft.

Meiner Auge Lust und Sonne

Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne

Darum lass ich Jesum nicht

Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.

Jesus shall remain my joy,

my heart's comfort and sap,

Jesus shall fend off all sorrow,

He is the strength of my life,

the delight and sun of my eyes,

the treasure and wonder of my soul;

therefore I will not let Jesus go

out of my heart and sight.

Mark 2: 1-12

When he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. Then some people[a] came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.

How have I come to the chapel this evening? As an observer, whether critical or not, as a bearer or as a paralytic? I take up a place in this story which fits with my situation at this moment in time.

*

And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

The hole in the roof suddenly casts new light on those present. And what does it do to me? Do I have the courage to stand in that Light? With or without the help of others?

*

Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—  “I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.” And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

To see a miracle take place and be unable to understand anything about it. The scribes are extremely critical; the bystanders astonished and happy. What do I feel?

*

In the next few minutes, we will say goodbye to the house with a hole in the roof. We glance once more over our shoulder and then return slowly to the here and now in the chapel. What am I taking away with me this evening? What am I leaving behind me?
