Week 15 - Jesus chooses His Way

Theme:

Jesus chooses to do what He feels called to do. He will face temptation, but He knows what He has to do.

What I may wish to ask:

That I can choose together with Jesus, that I can make the same choices He made. That I can live my life like He lived His life.

In God alone my soul can find rest and peace,

In God my peace and joy.

Only in God my soul can find its rest,

—find its rest – and peace.

Text: Matthew 3, 13-17 The Baptism of Jesus

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.

Jesus chooses, very consciously, to be baptised. He chooses this in order to follow the way leading to His Father. A way with many peaks and deep valleys.

I may have also been baptised. I consider my own baptism and ask myself whether it has played a role in my choice to take the same way in life as Jesus? Through baptism I may have chosen the same path in life as Jesus.

If I have not been baptised, I consider what this means to me.

*

John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

John tries to stop Jesus. I too am sometimes stopped from doing what I had planned to do. My life can turn out very differently to the way I had foreseen. How do I deal with setbacks in my life? And how do I deal with changes for the better?

*

And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

The Spirit of God, the good spirit in Jesus’ life. This Spirit of God is also for every one of us. Maybe I sometimes need to search for it and attempt to recognize it. But it is most certainly present.

Can I too hear this Spirit of God saying to me:

“This is my beloved, with whom I am well pleased”?
